Lighting
Recording studio lighting is important not only aesthetically, but it also must function well and not create electronic interference with the mixing desk.
Lighting your control room
Your clients will most probably sit at the back of your control room on the couches. If the general room lighting is dim, augment this with some spotlights or lamps so that they can see to write, or read scripts…or magazines if they’re not interested in what’s going on.
A dimmer for the main lights is a very good idea. Get a qualified electrician to install a dimmer that won’t cause interference in your mixing console and other cabling – any competent electrician can perform this work, making sure that lighting cables don’t run near your audio cables.
Near the front of the control room you will have all your racks and your desk. You need enough light here so that you can see what you are doing when changing settings. Most of your settings will probably be software-based, unlike what it was 10 years ago. So, your lighting needs to be strong enough to take the harsh glare off the screen, otherwise your eyes will get fatigued quickly. Never operate your recording studio in the dark with just the screen for light – this is a surefire way to damage your eyesight.
Spotlights help accent features
A few spotlights to pick up room features can make the studio look smart. A couple of lights on the far field monitors looks cool. You can use an ambient wash up behind the desk as well.
Gooseneck lights can be useful to point at corners when needed where the normal room light might not provide enough.
Keep a couple of torches in the studio as well, just in case you need to get in behind the gear to replace a cable
Lighting your studio
Air conditioning noise is the bane of recording studios, so many studio spaces don’t have enough of it. Lights will be one of your biggest sources of heat, so try to choose lights that don’t emit too much heat. Halogens may look good, but they often have large power packs that create heat and can audibly buzz. Fluorescent lights definitely buzz.
If you can have two or three levels of lighting in your studio, you’ll get the best out of your performers. Bright lights are good for quick sessions where the talent is in and out in a matter of minutes. Dimmer light levels are better for longer sessions where people might need to be more relaxed.
And you want to be able to use spot lights to focus on music, or if specific players require extra light. You can use lamps for this purpose. I used lights that I could dim and angle, and I augmented this with a lamp which could be moved around.
There are a huge number of lighting showrooms online which will show you installations for track lights, spotlights, halogens, LED lights (if you want to get all fancy), and more. Browse these to get an idea of what you want first.
